From Waste to Worth: 733kg Diverted, Skills Gained, and Quiet Leadership in Action

In July alone, we rescued over 733kg of unwanted furniture — pieces that would have otherwise gone to landfill. But we didn’t stop there. This month, we’re also launching a brand new beginner-friendly workshop to help more people feel confident using tools, and we’re spotlighting one of our most trusted team members: Gemma, whose story embodies the power of growth, care, and second chances.

733kg Diverted from Landfill: Why It Matters

In July, we saved:

• 9 bookcases – 189kg

• 3 chests of drawers – 81kg

• 1 theatre seat – 30kg

• 10 side tables – 140kg

• 2 occasional chairs – 36kg

• 2 desks – 54kg

• 12 deck chairs – 84kg

• 1 double wardrobe – 55kg

• 2 coffee tables – 28kg

• 2 stools – 10kg

• Miscellaneous pieces – 26kg

That’s over 40 pieces of furniture — nearly three-quarters of a tonne — diverted from landfill and given a second life.

But it’s not just about weight. Every item we restore saves materials, energy, and emissions that would’ve been used to make new furniture. The furniture industry is one of the fastest-growing contributors to deforestation and waste. Every time you choose second-hand or upcycled over brand new, you’re:

• Preventing carbon emissions

• Protecting forests from unnecessary logging

• Avoiding toxic waste from chemical finishes and plastics

• Extending the life of existing materials already in circulation

It’s a powerful form of everyday climate action — and it starts with recognising the value in what already exists.

New Workshop: Build Confidence with Tools

Saturday 23rd August, 12pm–2.30pm | Shepherd’s Bush

Tired of waiting for someone else to fix something simple? This hands-on, confidence-building workshop is for anyone who wants to learn how to safely and successfully use everyday tools — and leave with the skills to get things done.

In this 2.5-hour session, you’ll learn to:

• Plan and measure a wall-mounted project

• Safely use clamps, hand saws, drills, sanders, and more

  

  Workshop attendee drilling

• Choose and use screws, hooks, rawl plugs, and fixings

• Sand, paint or varnish your finished project

• Understand basic wall-mounting techniques

You’ll build your very own coat rack to take home — but more importantly, you’ll gain the knowledge

and confidence to put up shelves, hang artwork, and start small projects with ease.

We especially welcome women and beginners in this session, which is led by a mostly female team and held in our fully equipped Shepherd’s Bush workshop. No experience is needed — just curiosity and the desire to learn something new.

What’s included:
All tools, materials, safety gear, expert guidance, and plenty of encouragement (plus tea and coffee).

Meet Gemma: From Trainee to Trusted Team Member

Gemma first joined us in 2017 through one of our trainee programmes. Since then, she’s become a core part of our team — someone we rely on for everything from workshop prep and admin to delicate restoration work.

When there’s a task that needs careful attention or a calm hand, we turn to Gemma. Her approach is quiet, focused, and precise. “I’m the best at sanding,” she says with a small smile. “I don’t rush. I’m careful.”

That level of patience and pride in her work shows. Whether it’s stripping thick, old paint from a difficult surface or demonstrating techniques to new trainees, Gemma brings consistency and care to everything she does.

She’s also a big part of our community. Despite describing herself as shy, Gemma loves a good chat while working and looks forward to the social side of our events — especially the Christmas party.

One moment that stands out to her? The day she saw an old schoolmate walk into the workshop after twenty years. “He remembered me,” she says. “That made me smile.”

Gemma’s journey is a reminder that people grow just like furniture does — with time, encouragement, and the right environment.
