My name is Federico and I am from a town just outside of Rome. I recently completed a degree in Furniture Design. The qualification involved all the stages from initial concept of a piece, right through to creation. I was offered to come to England on a 6 month internship through my college and was placed at Petit Miracles.
Here, I have learned more about commercialisation in the furniture industry but also have had the chance to learn and use different materials I had never used before; different types of paint, finishes, oils and stains. On top of all of this, I am also slowly improving my English!
I enjoy designing the furniture as I am gaining skills to create the most unusual furniture. If I can imagine it, I can now make it! I like the creativity and freedom this gives me. I love creating something from raw materials.
I designed a dining table using pallet wood; the inspiration was a discarded piece of toughened glass that was leftover in the shop from an old table. My aim was to create something very simplistic but also unusual. I created a frame for the glass to fit into using 2 by 4s. I had to work out a practical but also beautiful way to create this. I measured, cut and sanded the frame. I then had to make an edge to protect the glass but didn’t want it to be too bulky. I love using raw materials, so wanted the main focus to be on the wooden frame but also felt it needed a little something extra. I decided to highlight the corners using grey paint, which ties in beautifully with the hairpin legs I chose for the table.
The table is now available on our website here: https://www.petitmiracles.org.uk/product/federico/
I have also created bespoke storage items using old scaffold boards. For this I had to measure and cut the boards using the mitre saw in the workshop. I then sanded down these pieces as they were very rough! I used 40 grit, then 60 grit and finally 80 & 120 grit sandpaper to get them as smooth as I needed. Once this was done, it was only a matter of marking where the pieces would join and drilling and screwing the parts together.
