From Recovery to Creativity: How One Workshop Sparked a Passion
I attended a Basic Furniture Painting workshop back in February. Beforehand, I had already spoken with Amy at Petit Miracles, as I was really interested in their employee skills programme. At the time, I wasn’t working because I was recovering from extensive cancer treatment and was keen to gain skills in a new area. Amy suggested that I volunteer instead, which I did when a slot became available.
I had already begun upcycling some of my own furniture at home, partly because I needed a creative outlet while I was getting better, and partly because I was curious about the process. I’ve always loved working with my hands, so coming to a course to learn more felt like a natural step. I specifically wanted to book at Petit Miracles because of their ethos of helping others and their fantastic reputation.
When I came to the Saturday morning workshop, I really enjoyed it—it was so different from anything I’d done before. Being in the workshop environment, surrounded by tools and vintage furniture, was inspiring. Kate was super friendly and explained everything clearly. Each participant had a completely different piece of furniture to prep and paint, all with their own challenges—such as using wood filler—which meant we learned a lot about the process. The pace of the workshop felt just right, and everyone was very supportive of one another. I also loved Kate’s choice in music!
I picked up some really useful tips, but the best ones were learning how to line a roller tray with foil and how to cut in properly. Those small insights have been invaluable.
Since then, I’ve used the skills I gained at the workshop many times over. I started with small projects at home and have now moved on to bigger, statement pieces. I find it all so inspiring, and I’ve discovered an amazing world of furniture artists and designers who fascinate me.
I can’t recommend the course enough. It’s so much better to learn how to transform your own items rather than buying something new or mass-produced. Not only is it sustainable and environmentally friendly, but it’s also incredibly rewarding and fun.

Discover the Wellbeing Power of Learning New Skills Through Upcycling

Learning a new skill can have a profound and lasting impact on your wellbeing. It’s more than just picking up a practical ability—it’s about reconnecting with yourself, finding a sense of purpose, and building confidence along the way.
In today’s fast-paced world, many of us are juggling constant demands—emails, deadlines, family, social media. Life can feel overwhelming, and it’s easy to lose that sense of balance and control. That’s why carving out time for a hands-on, creative activity like upcycling can be so powerful. It offers a chance to slow down, to focus, and to find joy in making something with your own hands.
Psychologists have found that leading a more sustainable and intentional lifestyle—where you actively repair, reuse, and reimagine—can support your mental health. It promotes self-sufficiency, boosts self-esteem, and encourages deeper, more meaningful connections with others.
You’re not just saving furniture from landfill—you’re saving space in your mind for peace, purpose, and possibility.
At our workshops, we see it time and again: people arrive unsure, often carrying stress or anxiety, and they leave not just with new skills but with a renewed sense of confidence and calm.
Whether it’s sanding down a table, reupholstering a chair, or simply learning how to use a paintbrush properly, every small act of creation has a big impact. Upcycling is mindful learning in action.
It’s creative, rewarding, and good for the planet—and it might just be good for your soul too. Join us to learn something new, meet like-minded people, and discover the joy of upcycling. Your wellbeing deserves it.
